The unit brought many parallels to the pandemic this year, but both the AIDS epidemic and COVID-19 exposed different inequalities and discriminations in the country. However, grief and mourning were a large part of both. During the AIDS epidemic, it was treated as a “gay disease” and the existing homophopia in the contry increased. The government did not want to be involved, and there were protests filled with grief and anger to show how many people are dying an awful death from the virus. Throughout this unit, I thought of parts of this year during the pandemic. The pandemic exposed and exasperated racial inequalities and discrimination in healthcare and other structures. The inequalities and discrimination have existed for a long time, but the pandemic worsened them. COVID-19 also quickly became a political virus in the country with public health being turned into politics, which causes more lives to be lost.
